Juan Carlos Toro

Juan Carlos was born and raised in Colombia, arrived to Canada on August 11, 2005.

He took Language Instructions for Newcomers (LINC), ESL and Upgrade at NorQuest College from 2006 to 2008. his studies at Norquest College, he was involved in Student council, student ambassador program, and the academic council committee.

He received the Shine Award two times in recognition for inspiring fellow classmates through efforts, attitude and commitment; the ESL Scholarship in recognition for outstanding leadership in the classroom and community; and the Student Ambassador Award in recognition of being an exceptional member of the Student Ambassador Program.

He is in the Dean’s Honour Roll at NAIT, in recognition of scholastic achievements in first and second and third year of his studies. He also received the Jason Lang Scholarship in 2010 and 2011 in recognition of his academic achievements.

In 2009 and 2010, he worked as a summer student with the Edmonton Mennonite Center for Newcomers promoting a community diversity project called Safe Harbour Respect for all, and developing a marketing plan.

Currently, he volunteers as a treasurer at his church, as a treasurer and adjuster for the Mennonite Mutual Insurance, and as a grade two teacher assistant at Homesteader School in Edmonton
